TOKI’S School of Music and the Arts: Our young artists flourish

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Classes started up in March with 70 students and 6 different classes. Between May 5th and July 1st the group performed 4 concerts and are preparing for more.

This first semester of 2021 at Toki has been glorious. In February, as is typical, children auditioned with the music teachers for a spot at Toki’s School of Music and the Arts. 70 students were selected between February 24th and 25th.

Classes started up on March 1st. This year our team of teachers includes Elizabeth Sepulveda (cello and orchestra); Mahani Teave, Valeria Prado, and Carla Fernandez (piano); and Javiera Benavides who is new this year ( Music Theory and Introduction to Music).

Classes are from Monday – Thursday from 4 – 8 pm at Toki. Our van transfers the children from the town of Hanga Roa to our school.

Financing the classes

Each one of these 70 students’ classes is co-financed 50/50 by their guardian and TOKI. This new modality which started in 2020 has been crucial and has enabled us to continue with our work through the pandemic.

NGO Toki has received help financing classes from the Fundacion Mar Adentro which, through an annual Collaborative Agreement, financed the group orchestra classes (given by Elizabeth Sepulveda) and the Music Theory classes (given by Javiera Benavides).

Scholarships for outstanding young music students

Besides the 50% financing that our NGO provides for every student, some children and youths with exceptional talent, an outstanding commitment, or a difficult economic reality  may receive 100% financing.

Another program being developed this year to help finance classes is the Godparent Program in aid of young music students at Toki. Besides helping to finance their classes, the godparents must remain in close contact with the children they help and their families. This initiative is headed by Carla Leon, ex administrator of the Music School.
